Pipeline Project in $12m Settlement for Permit Violations

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued a $12.6 million civil penalty to Sunoco Pipeline, LLP for permit violations related to the construction of the Mariner East 2 pipeline project, that both parties have entered into a Consent Order and Agreement specifying the penalty, and that the department has lifted its order suspending DEP-permitted operations.

The Mariner East projects are designed to provide needed pipeline infrastructure to transport ethane, propane, and other petroleum products from the Marcellus Shale to markets in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.

According to the company’s website, Sunoco Pipeline recently completed the Mariner Emergency Responder Outreach (MERO) program for the Mariner East 2 pipeline project. MERO has hosted specialized training sessions this year for more than 750 first responders in communities where Sunoco Pipeline’s Mariner East system will operate.
