Hazmat Investigation Following Fatal Tanker Crash

Los Angeles – A tanker truck hit a car carrying a woman and two children on a Ventura County highway, killing a 9-year-old boy and seriously injuring a 7-year-old girl and both drivers involved.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the car turned in front of the tanker on State Route 118 at Balcolm Canyon Road just before 8 am on Friday in Moorpark, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The tanker hit the car broadside before overturning, spilling gasoline in the roadway.

CHP says the boy in the car died at a hospital. The girl, who was in the backseat on the passenger side was apparently not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

She and the driver, a 45-year-old resident of Somis are in critical condition, while the tanker’s driver, a 65-year old man from Los Angeles, is expected to survive. The girl was airlifted to a specialty hospital for treatment.

A hazardous materials team was dispatched to the site to clean up the gasoline.

The freeway was closed down and motorists had to take alternate routes to their destinations.
