The train had 110 rail cars that were carrying grain to Galveston. Thirteen of them derailed, five of the cars tipped over and spilled grain onto the ground. The rear locomotive also leaked approximately 20 gallons of diesel fuel.
Six cargo cars ended up just feet away from spilling into the 2600 block of West Hardy.
Grain was tossed everywhere. Officials say the engineer wasn’t hurt.
Sources close to the investigation say Union Pacific is looking into whether excessive heat caused the tracks to expand.
A Union Pacific spokesperson said they didn’t have a timeline yet of when the clean-up would be complete and the road back open.
