Firefighter Killed in Compressed Air Cylinder Accident

A part-time firefighter/EMT for the Paint Creek Joint Fire Department has died after an accident at Station  22 at 12500 U.S. 50, approximately 10 miles east of Hillsboro. The accident happened around 2:16 p.m. Sunday.

Officials said 33-year-old Joe Patterson was working with compressed air cylinders when he was critically injured.

He was airlifted to the Kettering Medical Center where he died from injuries sustained in the accident. The coroner said the cause of death was blunt-force trauma to the head.

Patterson was a firefighter since 2004 and an EMT since 2008. He’d been working for Paint Creek part-time for three years, and also worked for other area departments. Patterson leaves behind a wife and three children.

So far this year, 47 firefighters have died in the line of duty.
