Firefighter Killed, 2 Wounded in Senior Living Facility Shooting

LONG BEACH, CA – A 17-year veteran with the Long Beach FD – Capt. Dave Rosa was killed in an early-morning shooting today at a senior-living complex in the city.

A second firefighter and a civilian bystander were wounded, after firefighters, responding to a report of an explosion at Covenant Manor, at East 4th Street and Atlantic Avenue, were met with gunfire.

Authorities say a suspect in the shooting, possibly a resident of the building, has been taken into custody.

Long Beach police said they were investigating whether an explosion was used to get first responders to the building.

The second wounded firefighter wasn’t immediately identified but was reported to be in a stable condition. The third person wounded wasn’t identified and their condition is unclear.

A team of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) agents is now on the scene to assist with the investigation.

Captain Rosa is survived by his wife and two children.
