Falling Beam Kills Construction Worker

MODESTO, CA – A construction worker was killed in an accident at a construction site in the Beard Industrial District just southeast of Modesto.

The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified the worker as Jose Magana, 52, of Stockton. He was pronounced dead at 8:42 a.m. at the construction site at 585 Garner Road, according to the coroner’s office. The cause of death is pending.

The state Division of Occupational Safety and Health, also known as Cal-OSHA, is investigating a report that Magana was struck on the head by a falling beam or similar material, agency spokeswoman Julia Bernstein said. She said the investigation is ongoing and what happened has not been conclusively determined.

Magana worked for Sinclair Concrete, a subcontractor on the project. Officials with Sinclair and general contractor Alston Construction declined to comment about the accident.

The Beard Land Improvement Co. is having a 476,580-square-foot building constructed at Garner and Leckron roads, which can be used for manufacturing or as a distribution center.

Beard Land President and CEO Ron Jackson called Friday’s accident a tragedy and said work was stopped at the construction site but has since resumed. He said workers are being briefed about the accident and the steps being taken to ensure it does not happen again.
