NEW ORLEANS, LA – OSHA is investigating what caused an elevator with 11 workers inside to plummet seven floors of a luxury apartments construction site, slightly injuring 5.
Investigators arrived at the site near Julia and South Rampart streets to inspect the elevator and some of its parts.
Officials say the elevator’s braking system apparently failed, but the spring at the bottom of the shaft saved the workers from any serious or fatal injuries.
The injured workers were transported to a local hospital, but all 5 were released soon after. The most serious injury, apparently, was a fractured foot.
OSHA will look into things such as the brake system, power, what the elevators were used to lift, and interview those involved.
