SAN PEDRO, CA – Hazmat crews responded to a spill from a cargo ship Sunday, when the 577-foot cargo ship Istra Ace, which was carrying cars, was reported to have been leaking heavy fuel in the Cerritos Channel at Berth 198.

An oil sheen surrounded the vessel where it docked near the Wilmington Marina Parkway off Henry Ford Avenue.

The Los Angeles Fire Department placed booms around the ship, which is registered Panama – a measure that limited the regular flow of ship traffic through some of the port’s channels.  At least one ship was diverted to Anchorage, Alaska.

The Coast Guard reported that three birds were injured in the incident and were turned over to the Oiled Wildlife Care Network for treatment..

A private company was handling mitigation and clean-up work at the scene, the Fire Department said.

An estimate of the amount of fuel spilled was not immediately available.

The cause of the incident was under investigation.
