LONGMEADOW, MA — Emergency crews on Friday recovered the body of a worker around noon, who, several hours earlier became trapped in a sewer project trench on Hazardville Road.
According to Stephen Crane, Longmeadow Town Manager, the emergency response equipment and manpower are vacating, and the DPW are going to come in and repair the water main and restore water service to the residents of the streets.
Crane said the accident occurred about 7:45 a.m. inside a trench at the corner of Tedford Drive and Hazardville Road when the trench relating to an ongoing sewer line replacement filled with water, trapping a worker.
Approximately 50 homes lost water service during the recovery operation. The street will likely remain closed for the rest of the day, according to Crane.
Massachusetts State Police helped manage the recovery effort and personnel from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Western Regional Homeland Security Advisory Council and the Western Massachusetts Technical Rescue Team, which has trained extensively for trench rescues and recoveries, also assisted a number of local police and fire departments.
