Washington – The NIOSH Musculoskeletal Disorders Research Program has updated its guidance document on the formation and function of ergonomics programs.
Intended for both workers and employers, Elements of Ergonomics Programs provides strategies for identifying and correcting ergonomic hazards, as well as references, forms and questionnaires.
The document also offers a six-step process for preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders:
- Identify risk factors
- Involve and train management and workers
- Collect health and medical evidence
- Implement your ergonomics program
- Evaluate your ergonomics program
- Maintain involvement
Citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the guidance document states that 31 percent of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in 2015 were related to MSDs.
