HazMat Crews Cap Chemical Leak in SC

Tyson_Portland_IN_2Columbia, SC – Hazmat crews and Columbia Fire were called out to Tyson Foods on Bluff road around 3.30am Friday because of a chemical leak.

Brick Lewis with Columbia Fire said that at one point the ammonia that was leaking, which is lighter than air, could be seen.

Lewis said a few minutes the ammonia leak had dissipated, and crews were able to secure the leak. A separate company has been called in to fix the problem.

There were no injuries reported from the incident, but the building was closed for a brief time.

Shortly after 7am employees were allowed back into the plant.
