Berkley, CA – Forensic architects are saying the balcony that collapsed on June 17th, killing 6 young people and injuring seven, failed because it wasn’t waterproofed properly.
Northern California Civil and structural engineer Darrick Hom told SUN News the cause appeared to be deterioration of the wood members by water or insects.
There were 13 people on the small, fifth floor balcony when it gave way, but the deck should have supported that much weight.
The apartment complex and balcony were subject to the 1998 Building Code, which mandates a balcony must hold 60 pounds per square foot.
