Costco Store Evacuated After Rupture of Refrigerant Line


BURBANK, CA – The evacuation of a Costco store yesterday afternoon following a full hazardous materials response, resulted in chaos, as shoppers rushed to the exits after hearing a “bang” inside the store.

The call came in to the Burbank Fire Department at 4:10 p.m., according to a dispatcher.Another operator with the department said the response was caused by freon, the  refrigerant used in air conditioning systems.The Costco in Burbank is at 1051 W. Burbank Blvd., near the 5 Freeway.

Multiple Fire Department vehicles were in the parking lot of the warehouse store.Burbank and Glendale hazardous materials crews, as well as Los Angeles County health officials, responded to ventilate the building after the leak.

Details on how many people were in the store at the time of the leak were not immediately available.

No injuries were reported.

The refrigeration repair company was expected to fix the system overnight, and the store was set to open this morning as usual, according to Capt. Peter Hendrickson with the Burbank Fire Department.
