ATTALLA, Al – A construction worker was killed and another person injured on Interstate 59 North near Attalla, Thursday. The two were hit by a driver as they were finishing work for the evening.
Authorities identified the deceased worker as 44-year old Joshua Goodwyn.
Authorities say a white Hyundai Tiburon struck a message board in the right lane of the interstate’s northbound lanes in a construction zone. The two workers were walking in the area and were about to move the sign when the accident happened.
The injured 23-year-old worker was airlifted to UAB Hospital, while the other worker was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was also transported to the hospital with unidentified injuries.
Alabama State Troopers say the worker was killed just before 5 p.m. near mile marker 178. The crash shut down all northbound lanes of the interstate for nearly three hours, but the road has since been reopened.
That portion of the interstate has recently been resurfaced. There was still some additional work being done.
State troopers say it does not appear alcohol was a factor in the crash. They warn drivers to pay close attention in construction zones. Speed limits are clearly marked.
