Hazmat, Fire Units Battle Blaze at Tire Recycling Plant

PILOT MOUNTAIN, NC – Fire continues to burn at New River Tire, as some of nearly 38,000 square feet of tires, standing about eight-feet-tall, is consumed by flames.

It all started around 1 on Tuesday morning when a police officer noticed the flames and called it in.

Fire crews arrived and set to work while worrying about contaminants.

Before 5 a.m., Surry County had four departments and 40 personnel on scene at New River Tire.

Crews worked with Hazmat and the EPA to make sure they minimized any possible contamination.

They’re also watching the weather, and wind, to see how those factors could impact the smoke’s trajectory and add any possible complications.

Officials are keeping in contact with schools and day cares in the area. They say if the smoke starts to hit the ground, they might have to let schools out early.

The National Response Center was notified, as was Stokes County, since much of the smoke was snaking that way.

Crews hope to have the fire controlled withing 24 hours, but say clean up could take days, if not weeks.
